Retreat Center · Högbensvägen 30
A restored sanatorium in Finland's forested countryside, now a creative retreat and community hub.
In the early 20th century, a tuberculosis sanatorium was built in Finland's forested countryside, designed around the principles of rest and recovery. Its long corridors, generous windows, and expansive common spaces reflected that original purpose. In April 2020, Raisa and Torsten won the building at auction and set out to transform it into something new: a vibrant community where people from around the world could come together to live, work, create, and grow.
Today, Hub Feenix operates as a cooperative across 15,000 square meters, hosting 20 or more full-time residents, an international digital nomad program that welcomes 8–10 nomads monthly, a volunteer community, and an artist residency program. The campus includes 100 beds spread across three accommodation wings, six event spaces (The Hall, Mandala Room, Ahimsa, Lotus Room, Earth Room, and The Loft), studios, makerspaces, and healing facilities. The building remains surrounded by pine forest, with a lake nearby and trails for walking.
The retreat spaces accommodate groups from intimate gatherings of 8–15 people to large assemblies of up to 120. The Mandala Room, on the fifth floor, offers views over the forest and suits yoga and meditation work; the Lotus Room, on the ground floor near the café, serves day events and wellness retreats; the Earth Room provides privacy for smaller groups with its own entrance and kitchen corner. The Large Hall handles professional events with lighting and sound support.
Accommodation ranges from shared dorms to private suites, with options for single rooms and seasonal tent stays. All meals served during events are plant-based, prepared with local ingredients and served in a communal dining hall. The healing salon offers therapies such as shiatsu and acupuncture, and an onsite boutique stocks natural cosmetics. Common spaces include lounges, a terrace, and a café open during events.
Programming reflects the site's dual purpose: monthly artist meetings bring 6–12 international artists to create; meditation retreats and kundalini yoga intensives run throughout the year; workshops span dance, movement, somatic practice, art, craft, and creative work. The annual Wonder of Life Festival draws the community together. Wi-Fi covers the entire building at 200 Mbps. The nearest town, Karjaa, lies 10 minutes away; Helsinki and Turku are each an hour by train.
